A hidden treasure

Hidde n away in the beautiful North Yorkshire village of Hutton-le-Hole is the Ryedale Folk Museum. Steve and I were lucky enough to meet the Museum’s Director Mike Benson a couple of weeks ago, who kindly invited us along to see what they are all about. The Museum shows different aspects of rural life, from the Iron Age Roundhouse and settlement to the 1950s post offi ce, with a farming area with animals and a cornfield with over 40 species of fl owers. The Museum hosts special activities and events every weekend and on our visit this was a 1940s WW2 weekend. It involved reenactments, which included the de-fusing of a landmine much to Steve’s amazement. The five acre site was full of British, American and even Russian servicemen and women, cleaning their guns, guarding buildings and even having a cuppa in the NAAFI. It really was like stepping back in time! We wandered round the 20 historic buildings and discovered just how our ancestors lived. The buildings included thatched cottages, some as old as 16th century and an Edwardian photographic studio. There are traditional village shops, including a chemist and a blacksmith’s shop. Museum Director Mike Benson told Coastal View, “We have special events every weekend, plus themed activities every day during the school holidays.” It’s a safe place to bring children and dogs on leads are welcome too. You can even bring a picnic along and enjoy it in one of the quiet corners in the grounds. The weather stayed beautiful for us, the cottage gardens and flowers were pretty and the whole atmosphere was truly amazing. The leafl et we picked up said, “We know you will find it a memorable place to visit.” They’re not wrong about that and we can’t wait to go again. We recommend a visit to anyone who would like to take that step back in time. Some of the future events include: Sun. 10 July, Vintage Tractors and Engines Day Sat. 16 July French Day Sat. 30 – Sun 31 July Napoleonic Weekend Sun 14 Aug Veteran Car Rally Sat 20 – Fri 26th Aug  International Cooking Week Sat 27 – Mon 29 Aug Roman, Viking and Saxon re-enactors Check out the website for further events taking place. www.ryedalefolkmuseum.co.uk
