A New Town Mayor For Loftus

At the Annual Meeting of Loftus Town Council on 9 May 2011, Councillor Andrew M Downs was appointed as Town Mayor and Chair of the Council, with Councillor Eric Jackson as Vice- Chair. Cllr Downs is married to Marjorie, and will celebrate 40 years of marriage in December 2011. He has three grown-up children, and six grandchildren. Cllr Downs, who represents Skinningrove (including Carlin How) on the Town Council, has been Town Mayor previously, in 1996-7, and has served on the Council almost continuously since 1991. He has a strong interest in the life of the community in Skinningrove and throughout the Town Council area. Cllr Downs is a life-long parishioner of Saint Joseph and Saint Cuthbert’s RC Church, Loftus, and has received the Papal Medal “Bene Merenti” from the late, now Blessed, Pope John Paul II for services to the church. He supports the wider church community within the parish, being possibly the only Roman Catholic who also plays the organ for services with the Methodists (at Skinningrove Chapel) and, when time permits, attends the local Church of England churches for Evensong! He will be supporting the “Help for Heroes” appeal and the Royal British Legion during his year in office, as he feels passionate about the welfare of our service personnel, particularly those who have been injured in conflict. Cllr Downs said: “During my year in office, I hope to build on the good work of my predecessors in working with the community, in the service of the community. I intend to promote transparency and accountability at all times, and a culture of mutual respect. I value the opinions and contributions of the community in these challenging times – at the end of the day, it is people that matter.”
