The clash of steel and the sound of music

Once again the streets of Guisborough will echo to the sound of clashing swords and the music of a variety of instruments. This is not some strange form of martial arts but a unique opportunity to witness the performance of traditional sword dances once common in this corner of north-east Yorkshire.

Redcar Sword Dancers are hosting this year’s Sword Dance Union’s annual day of dance and longsword dance competition on October 15th and teams from many parts of the country will be giving displays at the Market Cross, Bakehouse Square and Chaloner Street from 10:30am till 2:15pm.

The outdoor displays will be followed by the Longsword Dance Competition and Showcase in Prior Pursglove College at 3:00pm. Entry is free and is open to members of the public. Refreshments will be available.

There will also be an exhibition of artefacts and photographs relating to some of the many longsword teams that once flourished in the ironstone mining areas of East Cleveland.

Redcar Sword Dancers were formed in 1967 to breathe new life into one of our local traditions and are keen to encourage new members to join them. No previous experience is necessary and we would be delighted to hear from men of any age who would like to have a go at longsword dancing.
