The Community Animateurs have started a new fun and exciting ‘CREATIVE HERITAGE’ project in Association with Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum.
This project has successfully secured a small scale enhancement fund totalling £4,570 from the North York Moors, Coast and Hills LEADER Programme and Changing Spaces. The funding for this project is being made available through the Rural Development Programme for England which is jointly funded by Defra and the European Union.
This funding provides twenty three storytelling and craft sessions for local schools, libraries, Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum, local village halls and community centres within the East Cleveland LEADER area. Project sessions are FREE for children and their families to attend.
This project has also funded three display cabinets to be housed at Brotton, Skelton and Loftus libraries to display children’s crafts made for this project and to remain there for future use.
The Community Animateurs are currently visiting nine local schools with their heritage crafts and unique ‘animated story’ about fascinating facts from local history from 4000bc to the present day.
All participating schools are entered into a draw to win a FREE Tour of the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum.
The children are invited to join in and ‘step’ right back into history, dressing up in various period costumes, wearing wigs and hats and using props and puppets to ‘bring alive’ their local villages history. The children can then make a selection of local heritage crafts such as a ‘Heritage Mobile’ unique to their own village and Anglo Saxon masks and Saxon princess jewellery.
After school and holiday sessions have been scheduled to be held at local libraries, community centres, village halls and at the Cleveland Mining Museum. Activities include Ironstone mining crafts, T- shirt printing, jewellery making plus many more heritage themed crafts.
All the sessions are free for children of all ages and their families to attend with all crafts made free to take home.
Prizes are available at these sessions – FREE draw to win a Family Tour ticket to Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum and FREE refreshment prizes at the three participating libraries. Session dates and times and details can be found at www.communityanimateurs.co.uk
The Community Animateur sessions are designed and delivered by Jackie Miller and Linda Johnston and both ladies are delighted to be successful in their groups funding bid and thank Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum Committee for their support and Jay Jackson at Groundworks North East. They both have been amazed by the sheer enthusiasm of the children willing to be involved in the interactive story telling and the children’s level of fantastic craft making has surpassed their expectations. Local history and heritage has proved to be a very popular theme with children’s feedback comments including ‘totally awesome story and crafts’!
The Community Animateurs are a not for profit social enterprise led by volunteers and supported by Redcar & Cleveland Local Enterprise Growth Initiative (LEGI).
