Danger at Hummersea Steps

Slip sliding away: landslide blocks access to Hummersea Beach

Recently we received a call from a concerned person, who had been walking in the area around Skinningrove and noticed the state of the Hummersea Steps.

We contacted Kevin Wilson, Loftus and Lockwood Neighbourhood Team Manager who was straight on the case.

Within a very short space of time Redcar & Cleveland Public Rights of Way Advisor, Ian Tait told Coastal View: “Following a report that they were damaged, I visited Hummersea Steps this morning. A small landslip has dumped clay at the top of the steel steps immediately above the beach and has caused some damage to the handrails; unfortunately this has made access treacherous.

“A short term emergency closure of the public right of way is necessary and will be put in place today. Arrangements for repairs are in hand and will also include attention to some of the timber steps further up the cliff. I hope that these repairs can be carried out and the steps re-opened before the end of January.”
