Sixth annual Picnic in the Priory taking shape

The annual Picnic in the Priory will this year be held on Saturday 18 May from 10am to 4pm in Gisborough Priory and the adjacent woodland gardens.
This is the sixth year running that Gisborough Priory Project has organised the Picnic in the Priory and this year it will be bigger and better than before.
New attractions this year include the birds of prey micro team. Visitors can get close to a fascinating array of small birds, such as Erica the white faced Scops owl and Martin the merlin. They can find out all about these beautiful birds throughout the day as well as enjoying a flying display. Elsewhere on site Askham Bryan College staff will display a range of small mammals for all to enjoy.
In the woodland gardens there will be a demonstration of green woodworking by Gisborough Priory Project volunteers, Bruce and Peter. The age-old skills on display include hand carving and pole lathe turning, transforming small pieces of wood into useful and beautiful objects.
For the second year in a row, local artist, James McGairy, will spend the day in the priory grounds painting the scene before him. This painting will be one of the prizes in the raffle on the day.
There will be a karate demonstration at about 1.30pm by members of all ages from the Guisborough Sokudo Karate Group. Visitors can have a go at both archery and fencing, thanks to Whitby Company of Archers and Bladz
fencing Club. Storytelling in the woodland Phoenix Storytelling area, led by volunteer Katherine Appleton, will provide a restful alternative.
To add to the atmosphere, music will fill the air throughout the day with sweet melodies from the Gypsy Swing Band and lively rhythms from Eeh By Drum.
Visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic. Alternatively, several stalls will supply a range of tempting refreshments, from hog roast to homemade cakes and ice-cream. Alongside there will be a variety of other stalls selling crafts and plants complementing the regular market in the town and the special Totally Locally market that will be set up near the market cross.
Entrance is free to the event, with a small charge applying for some activities. Visitors must come in through the Gisborough Priory gate on Church Street next to St Nicholas’ Church.
Generous funding to support the day has come from ESCO (UK) Ltd, Hutton Chemicals Ltd, Guisborough Town Council and Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council. This has been put together with funds raised at other Gisborough Priory Project open days to provide a packed programme.
Gisborough Priory Project volunteer, Carol Robinson, said, “This is our biggest event of the year with something for everyone to enjoy.”

World Class pianist performing at Kirlleatham

World class pianist Gülsin Onay returns from a tour of the USA to play at Sir William Turner’s Almshouses at Kirkleatham this week.

Miss Onay, the principal pianist with the Presidential Symphony Orchestra of Turkey, toured New York, Boston, Washington and Houston only ten days ago. Her visit to the North-East takes her to only two selected venues, one on Tyneside and the other at Sir William Turner’s Almshouses in Kirkleatham near Redcar.

Immediately after her North-East tour, Miss Onay travels to perform in Turkey and then returns for recitals in Cambridge and London.

“We are privileged and honoured that a pianist of such high ranking international status is willing to bring her music to East Cleveland,” said concert organiser Peter Sotheran. The programme includes music by Beethoven, Liszt, Saygun and a Chopin Sonata.

The concert takes place at Sir William Turner’s Almshouses, Kirkleatham on Thursday 9th May at 7.30 pm. Forewind invites local community to discuss Dogger Bank Teesside

Forewind, developer of the Dogger Bank offshore wind zone, will hold a series of one-to-one discussions with local residents and members of the public interested to learn more about the Dogger Bank Teesside development (Friday 17 and Saturday 18, May).
Dogger Bank Teesside will comprise four offshore wind farms, each with a maximum installed capacity of 1.2 gigwatts (GW) and located more than 160 kilometres from the coast. Together they could generate around 16 terawatt hours per annum, or more than all the electricity needed by homes and industry in the North East.
The development’s export cables are expected to connect to the national grid in Teesside, just south of the Tees Estuary.
The one-to-one sessions will be at venues near the proposed landfall between Redcar and Marske, along the onshore cable route and close to the planned converter station locations by Lazenby.
Forewind Stakeholder Manager Nikki Young said that the sessions will enable local people to ask any questions they may have about the development, including work done to select the proposed landfall, cable and converter stations sites as well as the environmental impact assessment.
“We would like to invite anyone interested in meeting us, to register their interest by Friday 10 May,” she said. “Half hour slots will be allocated on a first come, first served basis and while sessions may also be booked at the venue on the day, availability cannot be guaranteed.”
“Since Forewind’s first consultation in spring 2012, there have been a number updates to the wind farm proposals. Significant progress has been made on the landscape and visual assessment of the proposed converter stations, and surveys have been undertaken to gather noise data and geophysical information, and to take borehole samples.
“These one-to-ones will give people a chance to find out the latest information on the project in advance of the final consultation phase which is due later this year,” she added. Those not able make one of these discussions but with specific questions can contact us directly at anytime.”

S.A.R.A: Saltburn Animal Rescue Association. The next monthly meeting

The next monthly meeting of S.A.R.A will be held in the TocH premises, Albion Terrace, Saltburn, at 7.30pm on Wednesday 1^st May. New members are very welcome.

18^th May – A Sixties Social Evening will be held on Saturday 18^th May, 7.30pm to 11pm at Saltburn Golf Club. Tickets cost £7 and this includes Pie and Pea Supper with vegetarian option. Tickets can be obtained from Foxrush Farm and the S.A.R.A. Charity Shop, Guisborough.

Entertainment will be provided by Luke, Guitar and Vocalist, Stan and Colin, Easy Listening. All proceeds will go to Foxrush Farm Sanctuary and Re-homing Fund.

Skinningrove at war

‘Aidensfield’ Bus

From the 4th to the 24th May, the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum will host a range of interactive activities to mark the War Years of World War II. The May Bank Holiday weekend has been chosen as the launch to the Skinningrove at War event as it is the closest weekend to Victory in Europe day (VE day), which is on the Wednesday 8th May. This is the first time in the museums 30 year-history that the tour will focus on World War II and not solely on the early years of Ironstone mining – in the Victorian era. These activities are part of the Skinningrove Educational Heritage Project which is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

Visitors will have the chance to discover what life was like in Cleveland during the war; 100 years after the mine opened. They will learn more about the vital role of the Skinningrove valley in the war effort, take shelter in the North Drift during an ‘air raid’, ‘witness’ 1940s blasting procedure, hear about the impact of bombs in the area, enabling them to get a real feel for what daily life must have been like during one of the most devastating conflicts in our history.

War Years

During the bank holiday weekend the Museum will have additional activities on offer. The normal Saturday opening will be extended to open at 10am.

Also from 11am on both Saturday 4th and Monday 6th May the Aycliffe and District Bus Preservation Society will be offering free tours on their vintage ‘Aidensfield’ bus, which featured in the original series of Heartbeat. This 1949 single decker bus will do 20-30 minute tours, throughout the day, of the local villages giving a real war time feel as those on board can join in a sing-a-long of contemporary songs led by the Community Animateurs. Children can also make their own commemorative crafts before boarding to add to their bus experience. When the bus is not touring it will be available for visitors to explore in the Museum car park. Donations will be welcomed from visitors who join in the activities.

There will also be the opportunity of joining a guided walk from the Museum, led by members of the Skinningrove History Group at 1.30pm on both Saturday 4th and Monday 6th May, to explore the war time history of the village. The walks are offered free of charge, but any offers of donations would be gratefully welcomed.

Jean, the Museum’s Education Officer, said: “It has been exciting developing the new Skinningrove at War tour at the museum. Over the past 30 years the whole experience of the Museum has been focused on the early years of mining in Victorian times. I hope both new and past visitors will take the opportunity to visit and experience how ironstone mining was undertaken at that time. Hopefully they will leave appreciating the vital role of not only the mine – and the discomforts this offered as an air raid shelter, but the industry of the whole Skinningrove valley during those turbulent years.”

Essential works at Guisborough Primary Care Hospital

EIGHTEEN patients were transferred from Guisborough Primary Care Hospital at the weekend after workmen detected an underground gas leak.

While the leak was immediately capped off and made safe, the patients – all elderly – were moved to other primary care hospitals in the area including Carter Bequest, Redcar and East Cleveland as there was no heating and hot water supply.

The urgent care centre, which is based in the Guisborough hospital, also had to be closed on Sunday (28 April).

Contractors have been working throughout the weekend and temporary measures are now in place to provide heating and hand-washing facilities to parts of the hospital.

This means the trust’s outpatient clinics and its other services run at the hospital such as radiology and the urgent care centre, will resume as normal today.

However, while work continues to determine the cause of the fault and fix it, which could take up to a week, a decision has been taken not to move patients back until a permanent gas supply is in place.

Divisional manager for community services Mandy Headland said: “In situations like this, which are unforeseeable, our first priority is the safety and welfare of patients and we quickly took the decision to temporarily move them to other hospitals in the area.

“I’d really like to thank all our staff, the contractors and our colleagues at the North East Ambulance Service for pulling together so quickly at the weekend.”

Daily on-site meetings are taking place with NHS Property Services to monitor the current situation and the trust will continue to provide regular updates through its website at www.southtees.nhs.uk and social media networks.
